Sea Eagle - Localization of floating object at sea
Safe navigation of vessels has become a major challenge. Large commercial vessels can afford sophisticated and expensive devices able to alert for the proximity of floating objects. Small craft must relay on human vision. Although most commercial cameras cannot compete with the human eye, an optical device could still provide a valuable alert signal to compensate for the inevitable lack of attention of humans (e.g. a scientist working on his laptop).
We will face the challenge of constructing a neural network able to spot a floating object at sea in different weather conditions.
The visual input will be generated using a DAVIS camera to record sea waves with and without an object floating in the visual scene. The video stream will be fed to a Spiking Neural Network that will be trained to detect the floating object.
